The family Tytonidae includes 1 species found in North America.

Barn Owls have skulls that are long and narrow and a facial disk that is heart-shaped. Their legs are long. Most individuals began to breed at one year of age and produced one brood per year. Incubation is 32-34 days. First clutches average 7 eggs. Young are blind and covered with whitish down which is replaced by a second downy plumage, followed by the true feathers. Maturity is at one year. Barn Owls are carnivorous, feeding on rodents and shrews.
